Which Indian Flyover Took the Longest Time to Complete?
Which flyover in India faced the longest delay before completion? Discover the story of the Barapullah Flyover Extension in Delhi — 17 years in the making.

🧠 Did You Know?
India’s most delayed flyover project wasn’t just long — it was legendary for its delay.
The Barapullah Flyover Phase-2 Extension in Delhi holds the record for the longest flyover completion delay — taking 17 years from conception to opening.
While newer megaprojects like Aroor–Thuravoor Flyover in Kerala (currently under construction) may break records for size, Barapullah broke records for time.
🏗️ Why Was Barapullah Flyover So Delayed?
The Barapullah Phase 2 flyover, meant to connect Sarai Kale Khan to INA, faced:
- 🔴 Delays in land acquisition
- 🧱 Structural redesigns due to Delhi Metro overlap
- 💰 Escalating costs from ₹220 crore to ₹1,260+ crore
- 🏛️ Shifting jurisdiction between DDA, PWD, and DMRC
- 🚫 Environmental and local community clearances
Originally proposed in 2006 ahead of the Commonwealth Games, the extension didn’t fully open until late 2023.
🛣️ Honorable Mentions: Longest Flyover (Ongoing)
While not delayed (yet), Aroor–Thuravoor Elevated Corridor in Kerala is poised to be India’s longest flyover at 12.75 km, targeted for completion by May 2026.
It’s being monitored as a potential future case study in mega flyover construction speed.

Flyovers are built to solve jams — but parked vehicles near on-ramps, pillars, or U-turn loops can create their own mini-jams.
