The Day an Auto-Rickshaw Touched the Sky at 5,798m!
🚀 A Rickshaw’s Ride to the Roof of the World
When we think of high-altitude adventures, we picture off-road SUVs or rugged Himalayan jeeps—not a humble Indian auto-rickshaw. But in 2022, a team of adventurers drove this three-wheeler to an altitude of 5,798 meters (19,022 feet) at Umling La Pass in Ladakh—breaking the Guinness World Record for the highest altitude reached by an auto-rickshaw!
📍 Umling La: The Highest Motorable Road on Earth
Located in Eastern Ladakh near the Indo-China border, Umling La is higher than the Everest Base Camp. With oxygen levels at nearly 50% and bone-chilling winds, it's a place where most vehicles struggle to breathe, let alone a city rickshaw. But the team, consisting of travelers from Switzerland and Canada, modified their rickshaw and undertook the feat as part of the iconic “Rickshaw Run.”
🌍 What Makes This Feat Incredible?
- Elevation: 5,798 m (19,022 ft)—certified by Guinness in October 2024.
- Route: Jaisalmer to Leh—over 2,300 km through deserts, plains, and mountains.
- Challenges: Thin air, freezing temperatures, unpaved roads, and engine stalls.
💡 Why It Matters
This record-breaking journey isn’t just about thrill—it’s a testament to Indian road culture and the resilience of one of its most iconic vehicles. The auto-rickshaw, often associated with short city rides, proved it could be an off-road beast with the right spirit (and maybe some mountain-ready modifications).
