When we think of Indian roads today, they’re filled with SUVs, sedans, and zippy hatchbacks. But have you ever wondered - which was the first car actually manufactured in India? Not imported, not assembled from foreign parts - but truly made in India.

The answer takes us back to 1957 - the year Hindustan Motors rolled out the Hindustan Ambassador, famously called the "King of Indian Roads." Based on the British Morris Oxford Series III, the Ambassador wasn’t just a car - it became a national icon.

Before this, cars in India were either imported or assembled locally from imported kits. The Ambassador was the first passenger car fully manufactured in India, with production starting in Uttarpara, West Bengal.

For decades, it was the car of choice for politicians, government officials, and taxi drivers. Rugged, spacious, and surprisingly comfortable, it was more than just transport - it was a symbol of Indian pride and reliability.

Even though production stopped in 2014, the Ambassador’s legacy lives on - and in 2017, Peugeot acquired the brand, hinting at a possible future revival.
