The First Railway in India

On 16 April 1853, history was made when India’s first passenger train embarked on its inaugural journey. It ran from Boree Bunder (Bombay) to Thane, covering a distance of 34 km.

This historic train was hauled by three steam locomotives - Sahib, Sindh, and Sultan - and consisted of 14 carriages carrying around 400 invited guests. The journey marked the birth of the Indian Railways, which would later become one of the largest rail networks in the world.

Interesting trivia:

  • The journey took about 57 minutes, a record speed for that era.
  • This route was built by the Great Indian Peninsula Railway (GIPR).
  • Tickets were not sold - the passengers were mostly dignitaries and VIPs invited for the launch.
  • The stations had lavish decorations, including floral arches and flags.

From that single journey, India’s railway network now spans over 68,000 km, connecting the country’s remotest corners.
