1. Cochin International Airport – Solar Power Pioneer

World’s first fully solar-powered airport, Cochin International Airport (CIAL) commissioned a 12 MWp solar plant in 2015, comprising over 46,000 panels over 45 acres and achieving full operational neutrality.
CIAL’s solar capacity has since doubled to around 28-50 MW, with innovative solar carports, canal-based agrivoltaics, and floating panels, consistently exceeding power needs and channeling surplus to the grid.
The airport earned the UN's Champion of the Earth award, celebrated for proving that sustainability and profitability can go hand in hand.

2. Biju Patnaik Airport (Bhubaneswar) – 100% Solar Transition

In May 2023, Biju Patnaik International Airport became India’s first fully solar-powered airport under AAI’s portfolio, operating entirely on renewable energy thanks to a 4 MW solar plant.

3. Hubballi Airport – Solar Leader Among AAI Airports

Hubballi Airport hosts an 8 MW ground-mounted solar plant (since Dec 2022), generating power for itself and exporting surplus to nearby AAI facilities, including Mangalore and Bengaluru sectors. Over two years, it has produced 24 million units, saved ₹12.4 crore in bills, and offset 210,000 tonnes of carbon.
Recognized with the “Platinum In The Green Airport Recognition-2025” by Airports Council International (Asia-Pacific & Middle East).

4. Delhi International Airport – Zero Waste to Landfill

Delhi Airport’s Terminals 1, 2, and 3 have earned the IGBC Net Zero Waste to Landfill Platinum certification, a first for any operational airport in India. The initiative includes comprehensive waste segregation (two-bin, four-bin), material recovery facilities, composters, and real-time tracking systems.
On World Environment Day, DIAL distributed over 6,000 seed balls crafted from clay, compost, and native tree seeds, encouraging passenger participation in reforestation and ecological awareness.

5. Nature-First Designs & Regional Eco-Terminals

Chandigarh’s terminal integrates eco features like fly-ash bricks and rooftop solar, earning recognition under GRIHA green standards.
Bengaluru’s upcoming green terminal, blending biophilic architecture (“Airport in a Garden”) with energy-efficient design, is on track through the Sustainable Green Airport Mission.
