🛤️ Did You Know? India’s First Electric Train Was Launched in 1925!
India’s first electric train started in 1925 between Victoria Terminus and Kurla in Mumbai. Discover how it marked the beginning of a new era for Indian Railways.">

In a time when steam engines dominated the tracks and the idea of electric vehicles was a distant dream, India quietly sparked a transportation revolution way back in 1925!
That’s right. India’s first electric train took off on 3rd February 1925, operating between Victoria Terminus (now Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus) and Kurla, a stretch of just 16 km in Mumbai. It may sound small today, but this single act of innovation became the foundation of modern rail electrification in India.
🔌 Powered by Progress
This pioneering train was pulled using 1.5 kV DC overhead electric lines, a rare setup at the time. It was commissioned under the Great Indian Peninsula Railway (GIPR) and marked a significant shift in technology and thinking.
At a time when electric vehicles on roads were virtually nonexistent anywhere in the world, Indian Railways had already embraced electrification.
🧠 Why It Matters
Most people associate electric trains with recent modernization efforts or metros, but this near-century-old move proves that India was thinking electric long before it became cool.
It also reflects the country's early adoption of cleaner, more efficient transport alternatives even during the British colonial period, a legacy that continues as India now builds one of the world's largest rail electrification networks.
🚂 Fast Fact Recap:
- Launched: 3rd February 1925
- Route: Victoria Terminus (Mumbai CST) to Kurla
- Distance: 16 km
- Voltage: 1.5 kV DC overhead
- Operated by: Great Indian Peninsula Railway (GIPR)
