🚤 The Floating Marvel of Goa

On 21 February 2020, India achieved a quiet but fascinating engineering feat, the inauguration of the country’s first floating concrete jetty on the serene Mandovi River in Goa.

Constructed under the Sagarmala Programme by the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), this concrete floating jetty was envisioned to ease road congestion and boost water-based connectivity.

Unlike traditional jetties, this structure floats on the river surface, meaning it rises and falls with the tide. It’s made from reinforced concrete pontoons, designed to withstand the saline waters of Goa’s rivers while supporting passenger and light cargo operations.

🌊 Why It’s Revolutionary

  • Eco-Friendly: Being modular and floating, it avoids the need for deep underwater construction and doesn’t disrupt marine ecosystems.
  • Cost-Effective: Construction time is shorter and maintenance costs are lower compared to fixed jetties.
  • Relocatable: It can be shifted if the navigation channel changes or traffic demands evolve.
  • Tourism Boost: Enhances Goa’s inland cruise and ferry experience, connecting Old Goa and Panjim.

According to the Goa Ports Department, more than 10 community floating jetties have been sanctioned along Goa’s waterways under IWAI’s plan, a first-of-its-kind initiative in India.

⚙️ Facts

  • Inaugurated: February 2020
  • Location: Old Goa, Mandovi River (NW-68)
  • Executing Authority: IWAI under Sagarmala
  • Supported by: Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways
  • Planned expansion: 30+ floating jetties across Mandovi and Zuari Rivers
