India’s First Global Bicycle Expedition
Discover how Parsi cyclists from Bombay rode 71,000 km across 30+ countries between 1923–28, one of India's earliest global bicycle expeditions.

Did You Know? Indians Cycled Around the World Way Back in the 1920s!
Imagine pedaling through deserts, mountains, and continents, all without GPS, paved roads, or even modern gear. In 1923, a daring trio, Adi Hakim, Jal Bapasola, and Rustom Bhumgara, left Bombay and embarked on one of the earliest and most astonishing bicycle expeditions ever recorded. Over five years, they cycled across 30+ countries, traveling more than 71,000 km and returning as global pioneers in 1928.
Why It Matters
- These “globe cyclists,” as they were dubbed, led by sheer curiosity and grit, mapped a path in uncharted terrains, making them early agents of anti-colonial visibility and cultural exchange.
- Their journey was documented in With Cyclists Around the World (1931), with a foreword by Jawaharlal Nehru, underscoring its historical significance.
- Their adventures inspired later Indian cyclists and travel writers to dream bigger and explore further.
