🚦 Did You Know? India Has a Highway Where Fighter Jets Can Land!

Ever imagined driving on a highway that can suddenly transform into an airstrip for fighter jets? Sounds like a movie scene, right? But in India, it’s a reality.

In September 2021, India inaugurated its first-ever Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) on a National Highway, a 3.5-km stretch of NH-925A between Gandhav and Bhakasar near Barmer, Rajasthan. This innovative strip allows fighter aircraft like the Sukhoi-30MKI and Jaguar to land in case of emergencies.

The project was developed jointly by the Indian Air Force and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). It was inaugurated by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on 9 September 2021.

This strip is not just a milestone for India’s defence preparedness but also a marvel of transport infrastructure, showcasing how highways can be designed for dual use: civilian and military.
