Did You Know India Now Has Its First Vertical Lift Railway Bridge?

When you think of India’s engineering wonders, your mind might wander to metro rails, highways, or sea bridges. But here’s a fresh marvel: India’s first vertical lift railway bridge, the New Pamban Bridge near Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu.

Opened in April 2025, this 2.05-km-long steel structure runs parallel to the century-old historic Pamban Bridge. Unlike its predecessor, the new bridge features a vertical lift span of 63 m, allowing ships and ferries to pass underneath seamlessly, a first for Indian Railways.

This modern engineering feat replaces the manual cantilever opening of the old bridge, ushering in faster, safer, and more reliable connectivity between Mandapam (mainland) and Rameswaram Island.
