🏞️ The Marvel Called Kuthiran Tunnel

Launched in stages from July 2021 to January 2022, the Kuthiran Tunnel on NH‑544 in Kerala is a modern engineering masterpiece. This twin‑tube, 6‑lane tunnel (955 m & 944 m long) cuts through the rugged Western Ghats, connecting Thrissur and Palakkad districts, and easing travel across this mountainous stretch.

📐 What Makes It Special?

• First of its kind: South India’s longest highway tunnel, featuring three lanes per tube and a total width of ~14 m.
• Safety & Speed: Designed for speeds up to 80 km/h, it replaced a notorious bottleneck known for landslides and night‑driving hazards.
• No toll: Free access encourages trade and tourism between Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

🔧 Engineering Behind the Scenes

Built by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the project began in 2016. It includes cutting‑edge ventilation, lighting, and emergency exit systems—matching international tunnel safety standards while preserving the fragile Western Ghats ecosystem.
