A Road Where You Paid First to Drive!

When we talk about toll roads today, we think of expressways, highways, and long queues at toll plazas. But do you know when India first introduced the concept of paying to drive on a road?

It all began in 1993, with a short but historic 12 km stretch between Indore and Pithampur in Madhya Pradesh. This was India’s very first modern toll road, where motorists had to pay to use a newly developed road corridor.

At that time, the idea of a toll was both surprising and controversial. People weren’t used to paying for roads separately since taxes already funded road development. Yet, this project marked the beginning of public-private partnerships (PPPs) in Indian infrastructure, setting the stage for India’s massive highway expansions in the years to come.

Soon after, other states adopted the model - like Maharashtra’s Jaisingpur Bypass, but it was Indore–Pithampur that truly started it all.

Why This Fact Matters

Today, toll roads are common across India, with FASTag-enabled plazas ensuring faster movement. But knowing that it all started with a 12 km experiment in Madhya Pradesh shows how small beginnings can lead to large-scale transformation.
