Nagpur has rolled out AI-powered radar cameras that combine speed detection, number plate recognition, and strobe lighting for accurate tracking—even at night. These smart units are part of the city’s ₹197 crore Integrated Intelligent Traffic Management System (IITMS), aiming to modernize enforcement and reduce traffic violations.

Where & Why Nagpur?

As a Smart City mission pilot zone, Nagpur is among the first in India to implement these radar units on arterial roads like Omkar Nagar to Manewada Square and South Ambazari to Vivekanand Nagar Square. With a growing vehicle population, traditional enforcement methods were proving inefficient—AI systems promise scalability and real-time responsiveness.

How It Works & What It Detects

Radar modules track the speed of every passing vehicle in real time.
AI systems read number plates using ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) even in low-light or high-speed conditions.
Data is transmitted live to a centralized control center to flag violations instantly.
Alerts are used to trigger speed challans or send live updates to traffic officers.

Initial installations are live at 10 major junctions, and the city plans to expand smart signal features to 171 junctions and 32 roads.
