Imagine a bridge higher than the Eiffel Tower, but for trains. That’s exactly what the Chenab Rail Bridge offers. At a staggering 359 m above the riverbed, it's now the world's tallest railway arch bridge, part of the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla rail link (USBRL).

After decades of meticulous engineering in the treacherous Himalayan terrain, this bridge entered regular service on 6 June 2025, connecting Kashmir with India’s rail network for the first time.


Key Highlights

  • Height: 359 m above riverbed, higher than the Eiffel Tower.
  • Length: 1,315 m with a 467 m arch span.
  • Materials & Durability: Built using nearly 30,000 tonnes of steel (SAIL's Bhilai plant contributed 12,000 tonnes), designed to withstand 266 kmph winds, earthquakes, and even pier damage.
  • Engineering Brilliance: Designed by international experts and built by Afcons, VSL, and others with consultation from IIT Delhi, IIT Roorkee, and global firms.
