🧠 Did You Know?
India’s deepest metro station is Howrah Metro Station in Kolkata, West Bengal — part of the Green Line (East-West Corridor) of the Kolkata Metro.
🚇 Opened in March 2024, this underground station sits at a depth of 34 meters (112 feet) below ground, beneath the iconic Howrah Railway Station — one of India’s oldest and busiest train terminals.
It connects commuters directly to India’s first underwater metro tunnel, which runs under the Hooghly River between Howrah and Mahakaran.
🚇 What Makes Howrah Station Special?
- Deepest station in India — deeper than a 9-storey building.
- Has four platform levels, with escalators and elevators connecting each.
- Offers seamless transfer to long-distance and suburban trains via subway passage to Howrah Terminal 1 & 2.
- Hosts thousands of passengers daily and is a major rail-metro transport hub in Eastern India.
🌉 India’s First Under-River Tunnel
- The East-West Metro Tunnel runs under the Hooghly River and connects Howrah → Mahakaran → Sealdah → Salt Lake.
- Built using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) from Japan.
- The underwater stretch is 520 meters long, illuminated with blue LEDs and reinforced with flood protection.
It’s not just deep — it’s also futuristic.
