Which Highway Holds the Title of India's First?
Discover the story behind India's first national highway and its historic journey through time.

SpotGenie Fact: The First Highway in India
When we think of India’s vast network of roads, it’s hard to imagine that it all began with one iconic route - National Highway 1 (NH1).
This historic highway traced its origins to the ancient Grand Trunk Road, one of Asia’s oldest and longest roads, dating back over 2,000 years.
In the early years after independence, NH1 connected Delhi to Attari (Punjab), running all the way to the Indo-Pak border. The 456 km stretch was the first officially numbered highway in India when the numbering system was introduced.
Its significance was far more than just a road - NH1 was a lifeline for trade, travel, and defense. Today, after the 2010 renumbering, much of old NH1 is part of NH44, the longest highway in India, but the legacy of NH1 lives on in Indian transport history.
