From Jeeps to Generations, The Mahindra Legacy
When you think of Indian roads, you think of a Mahindra. The roar of a Scorpio, the rugged charm of a Thar, or the quiet power of the new XUV700, Mahindra & Mahindra has been driving India’s journey from rugged utility to electrified sophistication.
Founded in 1945 by brothers J.C. and K.C. Mahindra along with Malik Ghulam Muhammad, the company started as Mahindra & Mohammed in Ludhiana, assembling Willys Jeeps for post-war India. After Partition, it became Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, and by the 1950s, it was synonymous with toughness and reliability.
What began with assembling rugged utility vehicles evolved into one of the largest Indian automotive groups, with operations spanning SUVs, tractors, EVs, defence vehicles, and even aerospace.
The Evolution: From Utility to Lifestyle
Mahindra’s early decades were dominated by utilitarian models like the Mahindra CJ and Armada. But it was the 2002 Mahindra Scorpio that changed everything. Designed and developed in-house, it marked Mahindra’s leap from assembly to engineering excellence.
In the 2010s, models like the XUV500 brought contemporary styling and tech, making Mahindra not just a rural brand but an urban favourite. By 2025, Mahindra’s SUV portfolio defines almost every segment, from the off-road Thar to the family flagship XUV700 and the electric future of the BE series.

From Diesel Dominance to EV Disruption
Mahindra’s EV story began early with its Reva acquisition in 2010, a bold but premature step. Fast forward to 2025, and Mahindra is now leading the Indian EV charge with its Born Electric (BE) and XEV series. Its INGLO EV platform, developed with Volkswagen’s MEB components, delivers advanced ADAS, 800V architecture, and fast charging, up to 80% in 25 minutes.
Mahindra plans to launch five new EVs by 2027, starting with BE 6e and XUV e8, while investing ₹10,000 crore in EV infrastructure and design R&D at Mahindra Advanced Design Europe (MADE), UK.
Safety & Technology
Mahindra has been consistently pushing safety standards, becoming India’s only OEM to have multiple SUVs (XUV700, Scorpio-N, Thar, XUV3XO) rated 5-star by GNCAP/Bharat NCAP. Its ADAS suite now features 13+ safety aids, including Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, and Traffic Sign Recognition, tailored for Indian traffic conditions.
SpotGenie: Responsibility Beyond Ruggedness
Adventure doesn’t mean recklessness. Mahindra’s new-age SUVs encourage responsible driving through ADAS and connected telematics, and that’s where SpotGenie’s QR-based alert platform fits in. Whether it’s a Thar on a trail or an XUV700 on a highway, SpotGenie ensures every vehicle owner stays aware, informed, and safe in India’s ever-evolving parking issues.
Global Ambitions, Indian Soul
From its humble beginnings assembling Jeeps to designing world-class EVs, Mahindra has stayed rooted in Indian soil while reaching global heights. Its Adventure DNA is now meeting EV ambition, proof that heritage and innovation can ride the same road.
The Road Ahead
Mahindra’s future is electric, connected, and global. By 2030, the automaker aims to achieve 25% EV sales share, carbon neutrality in operations, and deeper penetration in ASEAN and Africa. As Indian roads transform, Mahindra is set to remain the brand that stands for strength, safety, and smartness.
